Slater FFA meats team wins state competition

COLUMBIA, Mo., April 19, 2024 – The Slater FFA Chapter won the meats evaluation career development event at the 96th Missouri FFA Convention. There were 47 teams in the competition.
The team members include RJ Pannel, Tytan Wiseman, Connor Reeves and Benjamin Gochenour. Out of 181 participants, Pannel placed fifth, Wiseman placed sixth, Reeves placed eighth and Gochenour placed 21st. The Slater FFA advisor is Zach Crews.
Participants in the event are required to complete comprehensive exams in meat selection, storage, cooking, nutrition and safety. They also are asked to perform activities involving mathematical formulas for making cost-efficient meat products. Competitors identify cuts of meat by species, retail trade name and prime cut identification.
Sponsored by University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, CDEs prepare student members for career success, engage student learning and make a real connection to lifetime goals.
The Missouri FFA has 26,830 members representing 362 chapters. The national organization has more than 945,000 members representing 9,163 chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
