COLUMBIA, Mo., April 24, 2025 – James Hugh Baker of Memphis won the Missouri FFA Goat Production Proficiency Award at the 97th Missouri FFA Convention.
Baker, graduated from Scotland County High School, is the son of James and Joanie Baker. He is a member of the Memphis FFA Chapter. His advisor is Waltedda Blessing.
Bakers Supervised agricultural experience is in goat production. He has grown his operation significantly over four years. Gaining the ability to drive was a major turning point, allowing him to independently manage feed and supply transportation, handle hay and straw stockpiling, and take full responsibility for daily operations. He now makes key decisions in breeding, culling, and sales, manages large bucks for care and breeding, and has explored ways to increase profitability, such as selling buck semen.
Baker is currently attending the University of Missouri where he is majoring in agribusiness management with a minor in computer science.
Proficiency awards recognize FFA members who excel as agricultural entrepreneurs, employees or volunteers while gaining hands-on career experience. Goat Production is one of 45 proficiency award areas recognized at the state level. The Missouri FFA Foundation sponsored the award.
The Missouri FFA has 26,900 members representing 365 chapters. The national organization has more than 1,027,273 members representing 9,235 chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
